Her reflexes were good, Galen had measured, and Mara's instincts were solid. She was in peak physical shape-- though he'd already learned that in a much more pleasant arena than a training ring-- and she had a good, solid connection to the Force. Mara Jade had all the tools to be a powerful Force user, but it was clear to Galen that Palpatine had stunted her growth. She knew only enough to do her job, and no more.
Of course, that had been Vader's tactic with Galen, as well. The only difference was that Starkiller's intended targets were trained Jedi, and this Emperor's Hand had only been sent against non-sensitives. Still and all, she had potential. But potential didn't deflect blaster fire, and it for damn sure wouldn't keep her from someone like Maris Brood cutting her in two.
Galen's slashes came at her quickly, from both high and low angles. When she locked lightsabers with him in a press, he scowled. "You've got to understand your opponent better than that," he hissed. "Look for a weakness, but don't wait for an opening. If you parry me successfully, immediately counterattack!"
He took a few steps back, retreating from Mara and fighting the habit of flipping his weapon into the inverted, pommel-up hold he favored. "Come at me. I'll show you what I mean."
